GPS Waypoints Features

GPS Waypoints is a standalone application that includes both “free”, “premium” and “maps” features. The Free features are flexible enough to offer general users a way to collect and create Waypoints and Paths with accurate coordinates. The Premium version provides additional advanced features for professionals to automate data acquisition and manage their geodata. The Maps addon offers a spatial visualization of your geodata on top of base maps.

Features

The application starts on the Dashboard showing the current position details and the visible and active Satellites used for acquisition. The users can create, classify and import points, lines and polygons with the Waypoints and Paths functions as well as view them on Maps. A description of the free, premium and maps functionalities is presented in the table below

Menu items  Functionalities Free /
Premium / Maps
Dashboard Actual Position: shows current geographical coordinates, with an accuracy estimative, in the WGS84 (Decimal Degrees or Degrees Minutes Seconds) or universal projection (UTM) format.
Altitude Above Sea level: converts ellipsoid altitude (or elevation) to MSL altitude using EGM96 reference geoid.
Compass: magnetic north.
Acquisition Modes: acquires positioning in various modes, namely Network, GPS, DGPS and RTK.
Satellites Satellites in view: visible satellites at a given moment at user’s location.
Active satellites: satellites from which the device is actually determining position.
Skyplot: graphical representation of the GNSS satellites in the sky.
Signal: GNSS signal status and interference detection. F/P
Waypoints Create and edit: adds a new waypoint from your actual position or edit an existing one.
Geocoding: finds and sets the address of a waypoint.
Tagging: classifies a waypoint using the user’s tagging model.
Photos: allows attaching pictures, taken by the camera or from gallery, to waypoints. F/P
Create with shortcuts: adds automatically a new tagged waypoint using keyboad shortcut keys. P
Import a single point: creates waypoints manually (one by one) from geographic coordinates (DD, DMS), UTM coordinates or from street addresses.
Import multiple points from file: creates the various waypoints at once from CSV, GPX, KML or KMZ files.   F/P
Search, Sort & Statistics: searches waypoints; sorts by creation time, name and proximity; filters by tag; provides geographic statistics. F/P
Get me there: gets direction and distance to a Waypoint using the Magnetic or GPS compass.
Regional Data Conversion: converts global geographic coordinates (WGS84) to local datums. P
Export/Share: saves Waypoints locally to KML, GPX and CSV files or shares these files to other applications (email, dropbox, gdrive, etc…) for further analysis with GIS tools (e.g. Google Maps, QGIS). F/P
Paths Manual Path from current locations: creates a Path line or a Polygon by acquiring manually a sequence of points from your actual position.
Auto-Path: acquires automatically a sequence of points from current positions at a fixed time interval for tracking movements or making measurements. F/P
Import from Points: creates a Path manually from existing Waypoints.
Import from file: creates a Path automatically from CSV, GPX, KML and KMZ file. F/P
Distances & Areas: calculates the distances of path lines or determines areas and perimeters of polygons.
Export/Share: saves Paths locally to KML, GPX and CSV files or share them with other apps. F/P
Tags Tags on base Theme: defines and manages thematic tags that are used to classify Waypoints and Paths.
Import/Export Themes: saves locally the base theme with its tags (export) or loads pre-saved themes (import).
Maps Geodata on maps: spatial visualization of selected Points, Paths and Polygons over online base maps (requires internet connection). Maps
Online base maps: change base maps between Open Street Maps (OSM), Topo, USGS Satellite and USGS Topographic. Maps
WMS layer: adds a specific raster layer from private or public geo map server. Maps
Configuration Positioning Source: uses the built-in GPS receivers from mobile devices (up to 1.5m accuracy) or connects to external GNSS receivers via Bluetooth or USB (e.g. <1m). F/P
Logging: records the NMEA positioning sentences on file for post-analysis. P
Backup Backup and restore: professional feature for saving the user’s work. It is especially useful when acquiring a large number of points or for transferring/migrating data for one device to another. P
